Southern Maryland Online Newspaper recently published an article highlighting R&D Cross and thier many years of service.
“R&D Cross began 91 years ago as R&L Cross with two brothers, Russell and Louis Cross, transferring tobacco buyers for local farmers and routing the packed tobacco to the Baltimore tobacco sales market.
To complement the tobacco business, the Cross brothers opened a small feed and fertilizer store.
In 1935, the Cross brothers were approached by Southern States Cooperative, Inc. of Richmond, Va., to become a franchised private dealer carrying Southern States products.
The business was renamed R&D Cross when Russell passed along the family business to his son David Cross Sr. and his wife Sandra, in 1976. Now the third generation is continuing the family tradition, with David Cross Jr. serving as store manager and his sister Susan Sedgwick serving as vice president; while members of the fourth generation, Kody, Michael, Kassidy and Ryan, work in the business today.”
