UMD Extension Launches New Site Highlighting Farms and Local Food in Prince George's County

CLINTON, MD, SEPTEMBER 28, 2017 - Out with the old and in with the new and improved Fresh. Local. Fun. Prince George's County website! We are excited to invite you to see what Prince George's County agriculture has to offer. Our site is a resource for Prince George's County and DC Metro Area residents to connect with our farms, farmers markets, and businesses that support local agriculture, particularly in Prince George's County and Southern Maryland.

Explore a variety of resources on the site including a listing of farms by category, farmers markets, CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture), craft beverages, businesses offering local products, an events calendar, and a directory where food and Ag lovers can locate specific Prince George's County products. The site's blog, "The Menu," offers stories about the faces of agriculture in the County, as well as, the latest news on farm and food happenings in the area.

In addition to connecting residents to farmers in Prince George's County, Fresh. Local. Fun. PGC is a platform for agricultural producers, farmers markets, food retailers, restaurateurs, and county agencies to connect with each other to promote agricultural economic development and healthy food access in Prince George's County.

Here are what of some of our colleagues in the agriculture and tourism industries are saying:

"I am excited to see Prince George's County revitalizing their agricultural marketing and outreach efforts," says Shelby Watson Hampton, Director of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission.  "The new website will be a fantastic resource to help connect consumers to their local farmers, watermen, producers, and artisans. Features like the events calendar, the blog highlighting local farms, and the agricultural marketing resource page, will make it easy for consumers to find local wineries, CSAs, farmers markets, Christmas tree farms, urban farms, produce and livestock operations, research centers, and more. I applaud the Prince George's County University of Maryland Extension for creating such a valuable resource for both consumers and farmers."

Matthew Neitzey, Executive Director of the Prince George's County Conference and Visitor's Bureau appreciates the value of new site from a tourism perspective. "Fresh. Local. Fun. PGC is a wonderful resource for visitors to experience and explore the diversity of Prince George's County farms, wineries, farmers markets, and even restaurants providing menus with locally-sourced ingredients. Whether you are craving a relaxing getaway or looking for adventure, our farms are minutes from Washington D.C. and the perfect escape."

In addition to helping Prince Georgians view agriculture as economic development, Prince George's County Farm Bureau President, Yates Clagett, hopes this new site will connect residents with the County's agricultural heritage, as well as new food and agriculture innovations. "Fresh. Local. Fun. PGC captures the diversity of our farmers in Prince George's County. From our urban farms inside the beltway to our wineries, livestock farms, agritourism operations, and produce growers in southern Prince George's, we look forward to sharing our products and the talented people that produce them with both our residents and visitors."
