SMADC is proud to announce the release and debut of ‘Taking Stock’, a new full-color book featuring glowing photographic illustrations by Lena McBean, of Remsberg, Inc., and conversational portraits which reveal the faces and the personalities of the farming families behind SMADC's Southern Maryland Meats (SMM) program.
SMADC will debut the book to the regional community during a Holiday Open House. All are cordially invited to attend and enjoy locally produced small bites, beverages, socializing, and networking. Copies of the book will be available to purchase. To RSVP, contact SMADC staff at: (301) 274-1922, Ex. 1 or email: info@SMADC.com.
As the title of the book suggests, "Taking Stock" can have many meanings; in the literal sense of 'being aware' as a person, or in 'making an inventory' as a business, and as a 'shepherd and steward' of livestock and the land. Similarly, the book's author, Craig Sewell, Southern Maryland Meats' new Livestock and Marketing Specialist, embraced the challenge to 'take stock' of the SMM program's 52-member producers and set himself an ambitious schedule to visit every farm.
During these visits, Sewell was invited to "sit a spell" and listen to their stories. "Something extraordinary happened when they spoke and revealed their hopes and hardships," he recalled. From that point forward Sewell was inspired to capture each moment and share his insights. Commented SMADC Director Shelby Hampton-Watson, "We recognized the dynamic potential of a book to re-energize and invigorate our livestock project and also introduce to the general public the remarkable farms and families that provide us with our food." The result is "Taking Stock” - the Stories and Faces of Southern Maryland Meats.
SMADC will debut the book to the regional community during a Holiday Open House.
